The ancient
city was destroyed during a major eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79, with
a rain of ash that ended the city. It remained hidden for 1600 years until it
was rediscovered by chance in 1748. Ash and mud protected the buildings and
objects the effects of time, also shaping the bodies of the victims, which
caused them to be found the exact way they were hit by eruption.
